BRANT became Zedan Racing’ssixth Grade 1 winner on Sunday when the juvenile colt punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) with a win in the Del Mar Futurity (G1).
Breaking his maiden at Del Mar in his debut last out, race favorite BRANT immediately went into the lead and held a comfortable margin over Balboa in second. The seven-furlong dirt race saw BRANT race comfortably until Desert Gate pushed him at the top of the stretch and Flavien Prat started asking for more.
BRANT was comfortably ahead at the line to win by a length with the third-place runner over four lengths behind him.
“I let him get comfortable on the lead,” Prat said. “I was traveling very well, and I never felt like I was doing too much for him. He took a nice breather around the turn, enough to re-engage when that horse came outside of him.”
Donato Lanni secured BRANT for a sale topping $3 million at this year’s OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training and the colt is quickly showing why Zedan wanted him so much.
Bred by PTK, the Bob Baffert trainee proved he was ready for this in his last work when he worked the bullet at Del Mar on August 30.
By Gun Runner, BRANT is a three-quarter brother to Grade 2 winner and three-time Grade 1 runner up Pappacap, who is his dam’s half-brother. His dam Tynan is also a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Boppy O with the trio three of four winners out of Grade 3-placed Pappacat.
Zedan Racing has now had at least one Grade 1 win every year from 2020 to 2025 with BRANT’s Del Mar Futurity victory.
There are no upcoming entries at this time.
