Zedan Racing’s MEDINA SPIRIT earned a game victory in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) and racked up 10 more points –– now sitting fourth on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” leaderboard!
MEDINA SPIRIT took to the front upon leaving the starting gate, leading the field of six Kentucky Derby hopefuls for the 1 1/16 mile graded stakes test under jockey Abel Cedillo. One of two Bob Baffert entrants in the field, MEDINA SPIRIT inched away past the five-sixteenths pole and met his challengers in the upper stretch. All heart, MEDINA SPIRIT held a short lead under right-handed urging the the final furlong, and prevailed by a neck to fast-closing Roman Centurian.
It was just MEDINA SPIRIT’s third start, a debut winner at Los Alamitos in December, and game runner-up in the Sham (to Life is Good) earlier this year. The Robert B. Lewis (G3) marks MEDINA SPIRIT’s first graded stakes victory and increased his earnings to over $100,000.
Bred in Florida by Gail Rice, MEDINA SPIRIT is from the first crop of Protonico (Giant’s Causeway). The first foal out of juvenile winner Mongolian Changa (Brilliant Speed), he is from the immediate family of champion Forest Flower (G1) and multiple Grade 1 winner High Yield. He was purchased for a mere $35,000 at the OBS July 2-year-old Sale.
