Zedan Racing’s record-setting OBS March purchase BRANT lived up to his $3 million price tag on Saturday with a 5 ¼ length Maiden Special Weight victory at Del Mar.
It was no surprise the Bob Baffert trainee went off as favorite in the 5 ½ furlong race and he quickly showed why. Racing close behind stablemate Balboa, he wasn’t afraid to go three wide into the stretch and that gave him clear running room for his 5 ¼ length win.
That victory saw him named a Thoroughbred Daily News ‘Rising Star’, an honor that has also been given to Zedan Grade 1 winners TAIBA, ARABIAN KNIGHT, MUTH, ARABIAN LION, and PRINCESS NOOR.
The colt gets broodmare Tynan off to a good start as her first runner. Her Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1 placed half-brother Pappacap is also a three-quarter brother in blood to BRANT, with both by Gun Runner. Granddam Pappascat also produced Grade 3 winner Boppy O.
Each of Tynan’s first nine dams produced at least one stakes performer and BRANT showed she has every chance to join them in the near future.
This is just the latest headline BRANT has been featured in. His $3 million price tag was the most money ever paid for a juvenile at OBS.
“I mean he wasn’t a secret. He’s a pretty cool horse and everyone loved him,” Donato Lanni said after signing the ticket. “Just very lucky to get him for (owner) Amr Zedan. We always come here to look for nice horses and he was nice horse.
This was one of two exciting performances for Zedan runners on Saturday with HEJAZI finishing a close second in the Bing Crosby S. (G1) later on the card.
