Stalwart runner COUNTRY GRAMMER was already a multiple Grade 1 winner coming into Sunday’s San Antonio Stakes (G2) and left the race with a fourth career stakes win after his 4 ½ length victory.
Racing over 1 1/16 miles on the Santa Anita dirt, COUNTRY GRAMMER was content to sit just behind Bob Baffert stablemate Hopkins as that one set the pace. Watching Hopkins sustain pressure from Stiletto Boy throughout the early stages, he crept closer to set himself up for his move around the turn.
With legendary jockey Frankie Dettori aboard, COUNTRY GRAMMER was the leader at the quarter pole and started to clear the field as they turned into the straight. From there, the 5-year-old drew off to a 4 ½ length win in a time of 1:43.45.
Co-owned with Commonwealth Thoroughbreds and WinStar Farm, COUNTRY GRAMMER’s 14 race career has included victories in the Dubai World Cup (G1), Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), and Peter Pan Stakes. In all, he has won or placed in 11 of his 14 career starts with the horse worse than second once in his five Grade 1 starts.
